Evolution Of Planning Legislation in Punjab

Punjab District Boards Act 1883- The genesis of urban planning in the state of Punjab can be said to have started indirectly in 1883 by the Punjab District Boards Act. This act talked about the constitution of district and local boards aiming at improving the local urban self governance. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF PLANNING LEGISLATION Planning of town and cities in India dates back to the Vedic times. The idea of having planning legislation for planning of a city   is not new to India. Mansara Shilpa Shastra is the oldest known scripture in India which talks about town and village planning. During the modern times, the organized efforts for the Town Planning started during British period, which not only provided legal support, but also provided a guideline for preparing planning proposals. The Industrial Revolution was the transition to new manufacturing processes in the period from about 1760 to sometime between 1820 and 1840.  It was in the second half of nineteenth century that establishment of mills started in India. Influx of large number of people to cities and no proper prior planning to house this migratory population resulted in degradation of living conditions thereby causing epidemics. This lead to formation  of sanitary commission . Sanitary Commissio
